Yahoo Buys Mobile Video App Qwiki

Yahoo has made yet another acquisition: iOS movie-making app Qwiki.

Yup, this adds another trophy to its shopping spree comprising of Tumblr, Xobni, iOS photo-editing app maker GhostBird and enterprise conference calling service Rondee.
For those who are unfamiliar, Qwiki is an app which allows the user to turn pictures and videos into simple movies with music playing in the background with simple steps. What’s great about the app is that it also allows you to upload these movie clips onto Facebook and Twitter, sharing it with friends. Now, these are neat tricks, especially for someone like me who basically left my home laptop to accumulate dust and basically navigates between my Ipad and Iphone.

(My 4 day old niece)

To be honest, I only came across this app when I was searching for interesting updates in the digital world during the term break as requested by Sergio. But it only took me 1 minutes to get the hang of it. Now, this really say something about the ease of use of the app from a tech dummy like me =P Now I'm trying to make a movie of my 4-days old niece Cheryse, documenting her baby steps into this world, and showing it off on Facebook! Okay, I'm side tracking from the topic a bit, but well, this is my blog, so I supposed to be able to post anything right? So here's a picture of my brand new niece!
Coming back to the topic. It seems that Yahoo’s deep pockets are endless when it comes to acquiring mobile services companies in its effort to invigorate its image to users. But point to note is that Yahoo's purchase of the different startup mobile companies have sometimes been for their talents, and shutting down the products thereafter (remember Stamped or OnTheAir,?)
Not this time, according to Yahoo's blog (http://yahoo.tumblr.com/post/54451173706/qwiki-qwiki-yahoo). Note that the blog broadcasting this news is 'Tumblr', another purchase made earlier this year which has been quickly integrated into its main website. Tumblr's team has been kept independent in a bid to "keep it growing". Obviously Yahoo do not wish to mess with the winning formular that made Tumblr the blogging powerhouse that it is today!

Likewise, Yahoo has promised that Qwiki will remain alive like it kept Tumblr, much to the relief of its COO, Navin Thukkaram “I am especially encouraged that Yahoo will keep the product alive and hope to see Qwiki become a part of Yahoo’s mobile renaissance,” Thukkaram said in a statement. Hopefully, this stays true, as I will really hate losing another good application that I know how to use. Cause if you are tracking the news, Qwiki's team will be joining Yahoo's HQ in New York's main office. So it still remains to be seen if Qwiki has a positive effect on Yahoo's storytelling experience as CEO Marissa Mayer hopes, or will this change the magic formula that Qwiki has with Yahoo breathing closely down their necks.

Now with Qwiki in her pocket, what will Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer set her sight next?
